Brief
Walt Disney Imagineering has a rich history of model-making and using innovative technologies to visualize  a concept before it is built. As design technology has advanced and project timelines have grown shorter. The need for a pre-visualization tool that bridges the gap between design programs and expedites creative decision making is emphasized by this bottle-neck in the creative process.

Role
As part of the work-process overhaul at Walt Disney Imagineering and other segments of The Walt Disney Company (including Lucasfilm and Pixar), I designed the interface and user-experience of the Disney One-Touch platform, and prototyped a portable touch-screen device capable of running the platform and mirroring to a second display.

Solution
By conducting extensive research of Walt Disney Imagineering’s design workflow I developed what is now referred to as Disney One-Touch. It is a proprietary VR pre-vizualization platform that allows design teams to view spaces and experiences before they are built.

Born out of a need to streamline the physical and digital modelmaking design and review process, Disney One-Touch aims to accentuate the benefits of both mediums. While physical models are used to analyze forms, light, and spatial relationships, Disney One-Touch is used to review quick iterations, scale, and sightlines.

User Testing
The Disney One-Touch experience is built around teams being able to collaborate within the virtual space. Once a designer uploads a model to the cloud through the Disney One-Touch plugin, it is accessible to authorized collaborators around the world for review sessions.

In order to accomodate the needs of a variety of disciplines while maintaining a low barrier of entry, I conducted user testing to validate assumptions and streamline a beta release.

Touchscreen Console
By relying on a head mounted display with in-headset tracking and computing, I eliminated the need for an expensive and cumbersome rig and was able to explore a more portable option. Pairing the Disney One-Touch interface with a light-weight portable console increased the accessibility and adoption by further lowering the barrier of entry.

Beta Release
Once in a review session, multiple users can be in the model together in VR and collaborators not in VR can view the experience and even drive the experience through the Disney One-Touch touchscreen console. These drivers can navigate the model, highlight locations, take screenshots, and make notes in real time. Once the session has ended all notes, screenshots, and recordings are distributed to the attendees.

Use-Case
Once in a review session, multiple users can be in the model together in VR and collaborators not in VR can view and even drive the experience through the Disney One-Touch touchscreen console. These “drivers” can navigate the model, highlight locations, take screenshots, and make notes in real time. Once the session has ended all notes, screenshots, and recordings can be distributed to the attendees through the Disney One-Touch interface.
