Brief
The centerpiece of the interactive bridge of the ship is a large circular tactical table. To ensure immersion was maintained, this set piece needed to be fully-functional and responsive while creating the illusion of a dimensional hologram.
Role
I designed both the digital and physical experience, led user research, and developed new practical effects to achieve the desired illusions.
Gameplay
The bridge is designed with four distinct stations mirrored on the opposite side with the tactical table at the center, accomodating 24 participants.
Practical Effects
To achieve the illusion of a floating holographic representation of the ship, I employed an ultra-bright LED display with a reciprocal mirror filter, an optical fiber physical model, and a polarizer. In short, the reciprocal mirror reflects the the physical model and the polarizer prevents reflection of anything beyond itself giving the illusion of a floating hologram. The ultra-bright LED screen then displays the gameplay graphics through the reciprocal mirror maintaining the hologram illusion.
Accessibility
Because this experience is intended for everyone, the tactical table is designed to accomodate adults, children, and individuals who use wheelchairs.
