Brief
In addition to refreshing the architecture and visual identity of EPCOT, the landscape architecture was redesigned. Project and park leadership requested that a new suite of street furniture be designed that could accomodate the frequent layout changes related to festivals.
Role
As part of the EPCOT transformation, I designed and led the fabrication of a new custom furniture suite.
Epcot Geometry
The 60 degree arc (derived from the geometry of the original Epcot architecture) was a driving design rule giving continuity across the park as well as being in harmony with the underlying logic of its original layout and design.
By avoiding hard corners and sharp angles, homage is paid to the original utopian aesthetic of Epcot, yet it is expressed in a contemporary fashion. This design philosophy is iterated and mutated to create a highly versatile system of urban furniture.
Configuration Diversity
The various elements can be assembled and disassembled easily and quickly rearranged infinitely by operations staff. This allows for both the flexibility required from an operational usage perspective but also strengthens the visual identity of the park by embracing aesthetic and configuration diversity.
